I'm a slightly pixelated, multi-disciplinary digital product & interaction designer.
I worry about the religious approach some designers apply to UX – and I'm not very keen on the righteous attitudes espoused by a few – but I will always side with the user and believe absolutely that the 'gain' must always be greater than the 'pain'.
I like pencils. I love beautifully crafted products that solve real problems, in an outwardly simple way. I feel compelled to question everything and if the devil needs an advocate, I will invariably take a step forward!
I'm James Barnard and I've been creating innovative web products since 2000. I'm equally comfortable providing strategic product solutions, or getting hands-on, sketching, designing & coding HTML/CSS/JavaScript.
I have a deep understanding of front-end web technologies & performance optimisation techniques and I've been promoting a progressive, responsive, mobile-first approach for quite some time.
I like keep things lean & simple, both in process & design. I'm prefer working with start-ups or smaller project/product teams where my experience and broad skill-set of commercial strategy, creative problem solving and design/development can be at its most effective.

Conception, design & build of an interactive prototype for mobile-first, b2b, web application.
The objective was to focus on a particular market sector with a mobile-first, web application that removed all existing entry barriers.
Vision, conceptualisation, responsive redesign & interactive prototyping of large-scale transactional website.
Presented recommendations to the executive board on how we could take this product forward. The proposal & subsequent project was for a high-performing, device agnostic, modular platform based around a progressively enhanced, responsively design user interface.
As well as the mobile-first, RWD, we also created an HTML pattern library that was part of the continuous integration build process.
The objective for this project was to provide the next evolutionary step for the flagship distributable booking widget - statistically our most successful product.
Having conceived & designed the original product, my aim was to produce an HTML5 version that maintained the speed, reliability & conversion success, whilst exploring further usage possibilities.
The goal was to provide alternative vision of a product in early development stages by producing semi-interactive prototypes and advising the business on a responsive approach.
The product is now iteratively working toward this alternative vision.
Designs for an enterprise, management application. The semi-interactive designs attempted to incorporate a natural UI, based around a modular, responsive template framework.
As well as broader accessibility and high-performance objectives, the main design goal was to increase customer engagement.
